Mini-grant Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What are the most "important" areas to focus on when writing my mini-grant?
It is very important to answer each question on the application form. First time applicants should make sure their answer to question #3 in the narrative section of the application ties in with the items requested on their budget. Address each type of item requested (dramatic play, manipulatives, large motor, etc.), and why it is needed. Applicants who have previously received a mini-grant will focus on areas as indicated by an Environment Rating Scale assessment. See question #3 below.
  2. What types of items should I focus on requesting?
We encourage you to use this opportunity to request items that you could not otherwise obtain on your own. It is best to apply for several large, good quality items rather than many small items. Products that become used up, such as art supplies, are discouraged.
  3. What is the process if I need to make changes for approved items once I have already received the grant money?
This question is fully addressed at a mini-grant orientation workshop that all first time recipients are required to attend before receiving funds. Mini-grant recipients must email Cathy Passmore at cathy.passmore@sonoma-county.org or call her at (707) 565-6612 for approval.
  4. What are my options if I have left over money after I’ve purchased all approved items?
This question is fully addressed at a mini-grant orientation workshop that all first time recipients are required to attend before receiving funds. Mini-grant recipients must email Cathy Passmore at cathy.passmore@sonoma-county.org or call her at (707) 565-6612 for approval.
  5. Can I apply for sod or grass seed for my backyard?
No, this would be considered a home improvement.
  6. Where can I get technical assistance regarding my application?
We encourage you to contact First 5. Email Cathy Passmore at cathy.passmore@sonoma-county.org or by phone at (707) 565-6612.
